Introduction

The Staffordshire Bull Terrier (Staffy) is a small to medium-sized dog with a big personality. Loving and loyal, they make excellent family pets and companions, and will happily play with children all day or keep their people company in whatever they’re doing before snuggling up on any available lap for the evening.

History

The Staffordshire Bull Terrier resulted from crossing a Bulldog with a Black and Tan Terrier and was originally developed as a fighting dog in the 19th century when blood sports such as bull baiting were popular. A Collie was then added to the mix, and the resulting Staffy became renowned for its intelligence and affectionate nature, making them extremely popular family pets across the world.

Personality

Staffordshire Bull Terriers are brave and boisterous, but also obedient, eager to please, and totally devoted to their people. The reputation the breed has as being a “dangerous” dog is far from the truth, and as truly loving and playful characters, they are reliable, trustworthy, and great fun to be around, with the only danger being an enthusiastically licked face.

Care Tips Staffies are a low maintenance breed. Grooming: a weekly brush and wipe over is enough to keep a Staffordshire Bull Terrier’s short coat looking good. Feeding: two meals per day of high-quality food. Exercise: one hour of energetic exercise or play each day is usually enough to keep a Staffy happy and settled at home, but the more active interaction they have with their people the better. Free time to run in a secure garden is ideal, but Staffies are known to be expert escapologists!
