Introduction

Highly prized in their native land, the Swedish Lapphund is used to herd reindeer, but their sweet temperament and loving, loyal nature has made them a popular family pet and companion in many Scandinavian homes, although they are rarely seen in other countries.

History

The Swedish Lapphund has been a reindeer herding dog kept by nomadic tribes for centuries, but the breed may have origins dating back over a thousand years according to evidence uncovered in skeletal remains. They were originally developed to help farmers herd cows, and as well as helping Sami nomadic people herd reindeer today, they also work as search and rescue dogs for the Swedish army and as therapy dogs in hospitals.

Personality

Kind, intelligent, and affectionate, the Swedish Lapphund forms very strong bonds with its people and will follow them everywhere. A patient and loving temperament makes them especially good with children and older people and their protectiveness also makes them good watchdogs, but they are known to be excessive barkers and they don’t like to be left alone even for short periods of time.

Grooming: a twice-weekly brush will keep coats in good condition, but daily combing may be needed when shedding. Feeding: two meals per day of high-quality food. Exercise: two hours of exercise each day is the minimum for this breed, and the more time spent outdoors in a secure garden with the freedom to run, play, and interact with its people the better.
