Introduction

The Swedish Vallhund is a much-prized working dog in Sweden, renowned for its ability to fearlessly herd cattle. With its loyal, affectionate disposition and people-oriented nature, it has been a family favourite in Swedish homes for many years and is now becoming a popular pet and companion in other countries.

History

The origins of the Swedish Vallhund may date back to the Vikings, and they have been a feature on Swedish farms for many centuries. Versatile herders, rat catchers, and watchdogs, they are still favoured by farmers today, but their sweet temperaments and playfulness have seen them become much-loved family pets and companions.

Personality

Energetic and intelligent, the Swedish Vallhund loves to be busy, and if they’re not in a working role, they thrive on interactive games that give them a mental as well as a physical challenge. Protective of their people, they are always vigilant and can be aloof with strangers, but they bond closely with their family and make great playmates for children and exercise companions for active individuals.

Grooming: a weekly brush will keep coats in good condition, but combing may be needed when shedding. Feeding: two meals per day of high-quality food. Exercise: at least one hour of exercise is needed each day, ideally more with as much off the lead time as possible. Free time to run, play, and interact with its people in a secure garden will keep this energetic breed happy, and they excel at agility activities.
