Introduction

Thai is the name now given to the Traditional or Classic Siamese cat to distinguish it from the Modern Siamese which has been developed to have much more extreme features. Maintaining the breed’s original round-headed appearance, the Thai was at one point given the nickname of “Applehead” by fans of the Modern variety. Both types of Siamese are instantly recognisable because of their colouring, with a pale body and dark “points” on the head, legs, and tail, and stunning blue eyes, and both the Thai and the Modern are super-affectionate characters – and perhaps a little demanding!

History

Believed to be one of the most ancient cat breeds, the Thai (Siamese) is mentioned in scripts dating back to the 14th century. Named after their native land, Siam, known as Thailand today, they were revered as sacred cats and would be found guarding Buddhist temples.

Personality

The Thai likes to be given undivided attention at home, but in return, they are devoted to their people and very affectionate. Routine is important and they don’t like change, even if it’s just rearranging the soft furnishings, and they will make a lot of noise about it if they disapprove! Vocal by nature, Thai cats are known as chatterboxes and will get into “conversations” about what’s going on in their day. Playful and outgoing, they prefer to have company at all times (feline or human) and don’t do well if left alone.
