Introduction

Small in size but big in personality, the Toy Fox Terrier is an energetic, outgoing, and playful breed that can adapt to life in any size of home. Protective of their people and extremely loyal, they are known to be great watchdogs and born entertainers, but their high prey drive can make living with cats and other smaller pets a challenge.

History

The Toy Fox Terrier originated in the United States in the early 1900s. Smooth Fox Terriers with ancestry dating back to the 1500s were bred with smaller toy breeds of dog, including Chihuahuas, to create a toy-size Terrier. The bravery and intelligence of the new breed was put to good use on farms where they were very effective ratters, and they were often found in travelling circuses where they wowed crowds as performing dogs.

Personality

Affectionate and loyal, the Toy Fox Terrier loves to be involved in everything that’s going on. Their intelligence, eagerness to please, and natural ability to entertain make them great fun to have around, but their need to protect can make them prone to excessive barking.

Care Tips Toy Fox Terriers are low maintenance. Grooming: an occasional wipe over is enough to keep the Toy Fox Terrier’s short coat tidy. Feeding: two meals per day of high-quality food. Exercise: this playful breed is happy with two or three short walks each day, but game-playing and interaction either indoors or outdoors is needed to keep them happy. Free time off the lead in a secure garden is ideal, but as terriers, they do like to dig and can escape through very small holes.
