Introduction

The Turkish Angora is often described as a “ballerina” cat thanks to its elegant, athletic, and graceful appearance, and on top of that, its silky soft furry coat is often snowy white. In their native Turkey, they are considered a national treasure, and it’s only relatively recently that they’ve shared this treasure with other nations.

History

Records show that the Turkish Angora’s origins date back at least as far as the 16th century, and many believe it to be an ancient breed with links to the African wildcat. During the 1900s, it was used to help develop the Persian cat, and a breeding programme was then set up to preserve the Turkish Angora in Ankara Zoo. It was not until the 1960s that two Turkish Angora cats were taken out of Turkey to the United States where a new breeding programme began, and the breed became known to the world.

Personality

The Turkish Angora is beautiful to look at and it has a beautiful temperament to match. Energetic and outgoing, they like to spend their day “helping” out around the home, and they’ll be found following their people from room to room, keeping an eye on everything that’s happening. Sweet-natured and always affectionate, the Turkish Angora thrives on company, but with plenty of toys around, they cope with being alone for short periods.
