Introduction

The Turkish Vankedisi is the pure white version of what we know as the Turkish Van which has a white body and distinctive colouring on the head and tail only. Sometimes nicknamed “the swimming cat”, they are famed for not only enjoying a splashy game around water but for actually taking a dip when the weather is hot.

History

Originating from the Van Lake region of Turkey, the Turkish Vankedisi is a natural breed that is thought to have been around for hundreds of years. Translated from Turkish, Vankedisi simply means “cat from the Van” and other than colour, it is the same cat as the better known Turkish Van. The name Turkish Van was created in the 1950s to distinguish the breed from the Turkish Angora, but ironically, the “Van” has come to be associated with the head and tail colouring, meaning the plain white version of the Turkish Van had to be given a different name again, the Turkish Vankedisi.

Personality

Turkish Vankedisi cats enjoy human companionship and will follow their people around from room to room to keep an eye on everything that’s going on. They are friendly and intelligent, enjoying interactive games, but they can be a little more independent than some breeds, and don’t often look for a lap to sit on. Apart from their stunning appearance, another endearing feature is the Turkish Vankedisi’s soft meow, sometimes described as being lamb-like.
