Introduction

The Yorkshire Terrier is a lively, loving, and sometimes a little too brave small dog, that’s always alert and ready to warn its people of any dangers and threats it senses – especially the arrival of the postman! Small in stature but big in personality, they make great companion dogs that can adapt to life in any size of home.

History

The exact origins of the Yorkshire Terrier are unclear, but it’s known that they were developed in England in the 1800s and their ancestry could be linked to the Dandie Dinmont, the Skye Terrier, the Manchester Terrier, the Paisley Terrier, and the Maltese, creating feisty yet affectionate little dogs that were excellent rat-catchers.

Personality

Yorkshire Terriers are small, cute, energetic, and very loving. They are intelligent, and devoted to their people, and although only small, they will defend their family and their home bravely and fearlessly without hesitation, even taking on a much bigger dog. However, despite their “big dog” attitude, they are fun-loving, playful, and always eager to please, making them a great choice for families with older children or adults of any age.

Health Issues Yorkshire Terriers are generally a healthy breed, but conditions they may be susceptible to include Legg-Calve-Perthes disease (a deformity of the hip joint that can affect small breeds) and patellar luxation.
Care Tips Yorkies are high maintenance. Grooming: daily brushing is needed to prevent long hair from tangling and matting, and regular clipping will help to keep coats tidy and manageable. Feeding: two meals per day of high-quality food. Exercise: two short walks daily with as much free time as possible to run, jump, and play in a secure garden will keep a Yorkshire Terrier happy. Where access to free play is unavailable (they are tenacious and ingenious escapologists!) several short daily walks will be needed to make sure this mischievous dog stays out of trouble.
